they come running, flowers in hand
I’m sorry for your loss
onto the coffin it goes
let me know if there’s anything I can do
one last look
she was a great woman
and then
let us bow our heads in prayer
lilies disposed quietly
a formality
we mustn’t mess with
I pray she goes to heaven
condolences
but first, a ceremony of another kind
the wilting greets me
it is a strange feeling, a first
watching someone leave, body limp
I run my fingers through the lilies at the altar
a return to innocence
a return to fire
I watch my mother cry out
in a way I’ve never heard before
